Solids-Retaining Separators for Liquid/Solid Separation

The Direct Drive Centrifuges from SPX FLOW Seital Separation are designed for high-efficiency liquid-liquid-solid separation with extremely low solids concentration in the feed (typically <0.2% vol.). These solids-retaining separators use high centrifugal force to split mixtures into two distinct liquid phases while capturing particles as small as 0.5 µm. The compact, energy-saving direct drive design makes them ideal for continuous, high-volume production lines across the dairy, beverage, brewing, and oil processing industries.

All units feature Clean In Place (CIP) for hygiene and minimal downtime.

SPX offers solids-retaining separators with hydraulic capacities from 500 to 10,000 l/h.

Advanced Design Features

  • Direct drive design with motor mounted beneath the bowl

  • No gear or belt transmission – fewer moving parts, higher efficiency

  • Compact footprint enables easy integration into existing layouts

  • High-speed bowl ensures precise phase separation and particle capture

  • Continuous operation with minimal maintenance requirements

Theory of Operation

Traditional separators rely on mechanical coupling through belts or gears to connect the motor and centrifuge shaft. This results in energy loss, mechanical wear, and more maintenance. In direct drive systems, the motor and centrifuge share a single shaft, allowing energy to flow directly from motor to bowl. This simplifies construction, reduces power loss, and enhances reliability.

The direct-mounted motor sits directly under the high-speed bowl, and its shaft extends upward to drive the bowl directly. The result is a quieter, more compact, and lower-maintenance separation solution.

Applications

Industry Application Description
Dairy Efficient separation of raw milk into cream and skim milk at all temperatures. Also ideal for bacterial clarification. High throughput and energy savings benefit large-scale operations.
Beverage Clarification of wine, tea, coconut water, and similar low-solid beverages. Helps lower energy and maintenance costs.
Brewing Removal of residual yeast and non-soluble solids for improved flavor and clarity. Compact design suits visible processing lines.
Oils Processing of edible, vegetable, and essential oils where long run times and tight space constraints require compact, efficient systems.

Key Benefits

  • Energy Efficiency: Reduced transmission losses via direct drive

  • Compact Size: Smaller footprint versus gear/belt-driven systems

  • Low Maintenance: Fewer components mean less wear and lower upkeep

  • High Separation Precision: Recovers particles from 0.5 to 500 µm

  • Durable & Hygienic: Built for 24/7 operation in sanitary environments
