Theory of Operation

How the ParaTube® Tubular Heat Exchanger Works

The ParaTube tubular heat exchanger operates on the principle of indirect heat transfer between the product and a thermal service fluid — typically water, ice water, glycol, or steam.

Inside the exchanger, the product flows through a set of inner tubes, while the heating or cooling medium circulates around them in the surrounding shell. As both fluids move through the system, thermal energy is exchanged across the tube walls — either raising or lowering the temperature of the product as required by the process.

This controlled environment ensures efficient temperature regulation while maintaining product integrity, especially in sensitive or particulate-rich formulations.

The efficiency of heat transfer depends on several factors:

  • Configuration of the heat exchanger

  • Temperature differential between product and service fluid

  • Tube dimensions

  • Flow velocity and turbulence

SPX FLOW offers a variety of configurations tailored to your product characteristics, including viscosity and particle size. Our engineering team works with you to deliver a system that maximizes thermal performance, meets your production goals, and supports product quality and energy efficiency — all while minimizing operational cost.
