Nestle’s CPW develops emissions reduction plan

VEVAY, SWITZERLAND – Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW), the Nestle breakfast cereal company, has unveiled a roadmap to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 that it says will help cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and reach zero by 2050.

According to CPW, the roadmap was developed by external consulting firm Quantis, which took into account the total emissions across the company as part of an extensive audit that included work with many employees and affiliates, including farmers and logistics providers. The audit showed that CPW emitted 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2018, and this result will serve as a baseline for measuring progress.

The roadmap includes five key areas:

  1. “Sourcing ingredients”, which involves the use of renewable agriculture methods, such as working with farmers to reduce their dependence on traditional agrochemicals and moving towards 100% deforestation-free ingredients (palm oil, pulp and paper, cocoa, etc.) so that by 2025, 13% of the company’s cereals are produced using renewable agriculture methods;
  2. “Product Portfolio Transformation, which involves choosing ingredients with a lower carbon footprint, repurposing by-products or waste into new products, and continuously monitoring circular economy business models;
  3. “Evolution of Packaging, which aims to make packaging 100% recyclable by 2025;
  4. “Moving towards cleaner production”, which involves reducing waste and switching to alternative renewable energy sources in addition to the 15 production facilities that have already switched to 100% renewable electricity from the grid;
  5. “Moving towards cleaner logistics”, which involves maximizing space in vehicles, reducing fuel consumption and switching to 100% electric shuttles by 2025.

“More than half of our emissions come from ingredients for our products, 35% of which are related to cereals,” said Christine Truppe, CPW’s global head of sustainability. “Clearly, we need to work together with our suppliers, farmers and parent companies to address these emissions while focusing on our path to zero emissions. Our commitment to renewable agriculture demonstrates the potential to positively impact a wide range of interconnected issues, while remaining firmly grounded in a results-driven approach. As part of our Net Zero Roadmap, CPW is working to ensure that key ingredients (particularly cereals and grains) are produced using renewable agriculture methods (13% by 2025 and 50% by 2030).”

The roadmap is part of CPW’s Make Breakfast Better initiative.
